This study examines the influence of family interpersonal communication patterns on Generation Z’s self-concept and mental health. The family is the first environment that shapes an individual’s personality through verbal and nonverbal interactions. This qualitative study uses descriptive methods to explore communication dynamics among three AKS-AKK Yogyakarta students who were identified as having moderate to severe mental disorders based on hospital screening results. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, using purposive sampling techniques. The results showed that parental interpersonal communication patterns play a crucial role in understanding children’s physical, psychological, and socio-emotional conditions. Authoritarian communication patterns, characterized by parental dominance without listening to children’s aspirations, were found to worsen mental conditions and hinder informants’ socialization abilities. Conversely, authoritative communication patterns, which combine high acceptance and control with quick responses to children’s needs, were found to be effective in supporting mental health. Dialogic communication helps Generation Z build a positive self-concept, reduce anxiety, and improve healthy social interaction skills. This study concludes that parents’ understanding of their children’s condition through appropriate communication patterns is key to mitigating mental disorders in Generation Z.
