Abstract

The Javanese traditional bridal bathing ceremony is a rite of purification (to ward off evil) rich in philosophical values and symbolic meaning. This descriptive qualitative study aims to describe the ritual procession of the siraman, analyze the symbolic meanings of the ritual paraphernalia (uba rampe), and identify students’ responses to the siraman simulation exercise in the Bridal Makeup Business Management course at AKS-AKK Yogyakarta. Primary data were obtained through observation of the simulation and in-depth interviews with 24 fourth-semester students in the Cosmetology program, and were confirmed by the Chair of the HARPI “Melati” City Chapter in Yogyakarta as a key informant. The research findings indicate: (1) the siraman procession is carried out systematically, encompassing sungkeman, the unification of water from seven sources, the sprinkling by the pinisepuh, wudhu and the breaking of the water jar, kerik, and concluding with dodol dawet; (2) the uba rampe carries profound symbolic meanings, such as divine assistance (water from seven sources), protection (banyan leaves), usefulness (a pair of coconuts), and mental preparedness (the multicolored monco cloth); and (3) the simulation-based learning proved highly effective, with 100% of students understanding the sequence and symbolic meanings of the ritual, and 95.8% supporting the importance of teaching and preserving this tradition. This simulation method not only hones students’ practical skills but is also effective in fostering cultural awareness among the younger generation
